The Process
The investment process followed by Bank Sarasin & Cie AG as asset manager is as follows:
1) Risk management through sector specific assessment of risks. This includes sectors such as:
- Resource use (energy, water)
- Emissions (air, water, waste)
- Social stress (salary levels, corruption, production of armaments)
- Individual stress (hazardous occupations, employment related accidents, job quality, ethical standards)
- Measures and programmes to reduce the environmental impact over the entire life cycle of products (raw materials, production, use of product)
- Measures and programmes to improve relations with stakeholders (employees, suppliers, clients, investors, competitors, and the general public)
- The assessment criteria used by Sarasin Sustainability Research include use of various International frameworks for sustainability criteria, such as:
- For environmental criteria: World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), ISO 14001 and others.
- For social criteria: WBCSD, OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, UN Global Compact, Declaration of Human Rights, ILO Standards, SA 8000, European Foundation for Quality Management, Global Reporting Initiative, and others.
2) Assessment of companies.
3) Industry specific information gathering for assessment purposes, which comprises some 140 points per industry.
4) Use of various information sources such as:
- generally available company information
- monitoring of hundreds of newspapers through news services
- review of specialized electronic media including use of the internet
- review of research reports, financial and non-financial
- company visits and management contacts
- information from specialized research institutes and from NGOs
- questionnaires with relevant questions
 
The Team
SRI analysis is performed by a team comprising 22 employees. Members of this team have an average job experience of 14 years, speak 7 languages and comprise 5 nationalities.
