The Living Planet Fund invests in companies that are leaders in their field. Some are globally-recognized Fortune 500 companies, others are enterprising smaller companies that are effective players in market sectors that are particularly relevant to the social and environmental mega-challenges the world faces today. These are companies that have been assessed as financial attractive as an investment, having sound governance, public commitment to environmental and social goals coupled with clear business growth opportunities.

Through its different sub-funds, the Living Planet Fund invests in the following themes:

  • Environmental chemistry and biology: services and processes that allow for the reduction of the environmental impact of human activities due to advances in chemical and biological engineering. Biochemical (chemicals source by biomass), bioenergy equipment.
  • Ecological management of environmental systems: management systems, management tools and processes that optimize the operations of economic activities so as to reduce the environmental impact. Environmental engineering, pollution control & testing, CO2 capture and reduction.
  • Financial Services: Private banking and infrastructure financing in emerging countries, fair long-term savings schemes, socially responsible investment.
  • Health: Preventive healthcare products and services, elderly care; cost-efficient healthcare products and treatments; cures for neglected diseases in developing markets.
  • Knowledge Society: Education services, information providers (media, publishers), IT infrastructure.
  • Management of natural resources: this sector refers to environmental technologies that allow for the efficient and sustainable management of natural resources (water, forest, etc.).
  • New ecological materials: as a result of their constitution or due to their special functions, the use of new ecological materials allow for the substitution of existing more polluting materials.
  • Renewable energy and energy efficiency: all processes, products and services that permit a reduction in the energy consumption. Solar-, wind-, hydro-energies, smart grid, building efficient materials, LED products.
  • Smart housing: Insulation, energy-efficient heating systems and electrical appliances.
  • Sustainable Consumption: Organic and fair trade products; socially responsible supply chain management; product safety and quality control.
  • Sustainable Mobility: Low environmental-impact means of transportation or any other services or products that allow for the reduction of the environmental impact associated with the travels of human populations. Public transport, fuel-efficient technologies, non-fossil fuel propulsion technologies.
  • Waste management: all products, services and tools used to recycle or to reduce waste, to produce energy from waste, or to the treatment of waste so as to reduce their environmental impacts.
  • Water management: water utilities, infrastructure equipment and construction, water distribution, water treatment.

Company: GAMESA

The development of renewable energy sources is high on the sustainability agenda of most governments, international organizations and the private sector. This Spanish wind turbine manufacturer and wind farm developer is the leading supplier in its home country and in Italy and is active in a number of emerging markets including India, Egypt, Mexico and Morocco.

Company: AVIVA

Aviva is the world's fifth largest insurer. Insurers can make a great contribution to reduce environmental and social impact by integrating sustainability criteria into investment and risk assessment policies. In 2007, Aviva became one of the few leading insurers to be “carbon neutral” group-wide.

Gilead Sciences, Inc. develops and manufactures drugs with a focus on treatments for infectious diseases. Medical biotechnology opens up new therapeutic possibilities. The company's major marketed drugs include the HIV treatments.

Theme: Knowledge society

Company: HEWLETT-PACKARD

HP set a goal for 2010 to reduce energy use of PCs by 25% compared to 2005. It is one of the few electronics companies to publish recycling goals and to run a recycling programme for used products in over 30 countries.

A supplier code of conduct based on the ILO Core Conventions and the relevant monitoring system are in place. HP’s "Focused Improvement Supplier Initiative" offers a one-year training programme on environmental and socially responsible practices to supplier factory managers in China.

Company: VOSSLOH

Vossloh AG is a manufacturer of rail infrastructure and rolling stock offering advanced technologies that reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of diesel locomotives and reduce the noise levels of rail operations. It has a strong environmental track record, having implemented programmes to recycle or process water in rolling-stock cleaning plants and the switch to solvent-free products for the painting of locomotives.

Company: ROCKWOOL INTERNATIONAL

Founded in 1909, Rockwool International is the world’s leading manufacturer of stone wool products.

Rockwool’s insulation products help significantly lower energy consumption for heating and cooling buildings and surpass many other insulation materials in respect of grey energy levels and insulation performance.

Rockwool is also developing a service called BuildDesk focusing on energy saving initiatives for buildings.

Theme: Sustainable consumption

Company: LINDT & SPRÜNGLI

Founded in 1845, Lindt & Sprüngli produces fine chocolates, with a very high reputation internationally.

L&S Code of Conduct sets out the requirements expected of its suppliers regarding compliance with laws, corruption and bribery, social and working conditions, child labour, and the outside environment. Via its engagement in the World Cocoa Foundation, it supports projects that target more sustainable farming and improved living conditions for small farmers

Company: KURITA WATER INDUSTRIES

Kurita Water Industries is active in two business segments: water treatment facilities and water treatment chemicals.

Research and development activities include reduction and treatment of sewage sludge and organic wastes, reduction of chemicals use, as well as fuel cell technologies.

Services in the field of water treatment include analysis and improvement of resource efficiency at customers’ premises. In 2003 a dedicated department was set up to provide advice in this area.
